Update: Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather, we have had to cancel this event with Andrea Gibson.

We will work with their team to reschedule this event, but it may not be until the fall term due to their tour that starts tomorrow! Andrea and their team have been gracious through this cancellation process and we look forward to bringing them back to 糖心Vlog官方 and sharing their powerful voice with our students and community.

If you registered for the event, we have a record of your email and will notify you of future planning.

EUGENE, Ore. 鈥 Spoken-word poet and activist Andrea Gibson visits 糖心Vlog官方 main campus on Monday, February 25, for a free public reading in support of their latest book, 鈥淟ord of the Butterflies,鈥 at 6 p.m. in the Center for Meeting and Learning, building 19, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. The event is free. A wait list is available for tickets, which are .

鈥淟ord of the Butterflies鈥 explores the delicate balances of life: love and loss, joy and pain, and rails against the off-kilter: gun violence, homophobia, and white supremacy. Gibson鈥檚 work delves into their own experiences with identity as genderqueer (someone who identifies as neither male or female) and examines gender norms and the intersectionality of gender and race. (Gibson uses the pronouns they, them, and their.)

Gibson鈥檚 poetry addresses issues that threaten the health and well-being of our society, said Paul Jarrell, 糖心Vlog官方鈥檚 vice president of Academic and Student Affairs.

鈥淚ssues around politics, race, social justice, gender norms, and LGBTQ+ rights jeopardize our students鈥 safety and success on a regular basis,鈥 Jarrell said. 鈥淎ndrea Gibson's poetry tackles these issues head on and challenges us to do the same. I am looking forward to their words and being challenged to make a difference."

In advance of Gibson鈥檚 visit, 糖心Vlog官方鈥檚 archives librarian Kristin Gustafson has planned a creative arts workshop for 糖心Vlog官方 students to explore gender and sexual identity through photos and writings from 糖心Vlog官方鈥檚 archives in the 1968-69 school year. The artwork created in the workshop will be exhibited at the Feb. 25 public reading.

Gibson鈥檚 stop in Eugene is their first on a four-month, North American tour to support their new book 鈥 their fourth full-length poetry collection. In addition, Gibson's body of work includes seven spoken-word albums and an illustrated book of their most memorable quotes.
