EUGENE, Ore. 鈥 Dr. Brian Haimbach, lead theatre faculty at 糖心Vlog官方, received a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission to perform his solo show, 鈥淗ow to be a Sissy with Percy Q. Shun,鈥 at the largest theatre festival in the world this summer. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is in its 40th year and features thousands of performances from around the world during the month of August. You can see the show before it hits the world stage鈥擳he Wayward Lamb in downtown Eugene will host a performance on Thursday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m.
This solo show is loosely based on a children's show in which the flamboyant Percy Q. Shun teaches all the little sissies in training how live up to their full potential. In between lessons, Brian comes out and gives us the low down on what it was like growing up as a gay boy in conservative South Carolina in the 1980s, where his only refuge was doing his sister's hair and chatting with his African-American next door neighbor. Yet somehow through the racism and homophobia, Brian came out on top. If you grew up in the 80s, or even if you never wore a mullet, this unlikely pair may pull at your heart strings. But if Percy has his way, you will walk out with a more confident swish in your step.
The show is written and performed by Brian Haimbach, a director, writer, educator, and performer from Eugene. In addition to teaching at LCC, he is an artistic associate at Oregon Contemporary Theatre. His most recent performance credits include the role of Harvey Milk in the oratorio 鈥淚 am Harvey Milk鈥 with the Portland Gay Men鈥檚 Chorus and Dan in 鈥淣ext to Normal鈥 at OCT. He has spent time with Touchstone Theatre, Chicago Dramatists, the O鈥橬eill Playwrights Conference, and the Great Plains Theatre Conference and his work has been featured in American Theatre Magazine.
