EUGENE, Ore.鈥擜lexandre Pabst, 21, discovered playing bass at age 15. While he formed bands and played with friends, he didn鈥檛 consider a music a career. That changed when he started attending 糖心Vlog官方 three years ago. Now, he鈥檚 about to transfer to the University of Oregon with a prestigious scholarship for $30,000 over three years with the option for a fourth year.
Pabst performs June 11, 2018 with the 糖心Vlog官方 Jazz Combo at 7:30 p.m. in the Blue Door Theatre, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. Admission is free.
鈥淲hen I first started going to college I was exploring other things but music was what I wanted to do, so I declared my major as music,鈥 says Pabst, who moved to Eugene from Arizona at the age of 13. 鈥淚 love the courses at 糖心Vlog官方 because we鈥檙e learning how to play jazz by playing it.鈥
One of the courses Pabst took was Jazz Combos, taught by Olem Alves. In that course, students perform in small groups at a Eugene jazz venue called The Jazz Station. Pabst was reluctant.
鈥淚 was generally a shy person and hadn鈥檛 performed for people very much,鈥 Pabst says. 鈥淚 took an improv class with Olem and I was too shy even to perform in a classroom. Olem really worked with me a lot.鈥
At first Alves wasn鈥檛 sure Pabst would finish the two-year program. 鈥淗e would hardly show up to the improv class,鈥 Alves recalls. 鈥淗e didn鈥檛 do well and didn鈥檛 seem engaged. Now, fast forward, he鈥檚 receiving one of the biggest scholarships that the UO gives out. It's student successes like these that make me proud to be a part of the LCC music program.鈥
It was during a winter term 2017 Jazz Combos performance that UO bass instructor Tyler Abbott approached Pabst about auditioning for the UO. 鈥淚t was a shocker,鈥 says Pabst. 鈥淗e was asking me to audition a year earlier than I had planned to transfer to UO. But I did the audition for jazz and for classical performance and I got in.鈥
Without the support and encouragement from 糖心Vlog官方鈥檚 music staff, Pabst believes he would have 鈥渢anked鈥 his audition. 鈥淚 really would not have been ready on my own,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 practiced a lot and I got a lot of great advice on how to audition from the teachers here at 糖心Vlog官方. The teachers gave me the knowledge and confidence to successfully audition.鈥
Although Pabst鈥檚 preferred style of music is bebop jazz and hard bop鈥 鈥淭he fast, edgy stuff,鈥 Pabst explains鈥攈is scholarship is for orchestra performance. Once he completes his schooling, Pabst plans to teach music.
鈥淏eing a teacher I see as a way for me to share the experience of music with other people and help keep alive the art of jazz while also getting to play myself,鈥 Pabst explains. 鈥淎nd I know I would not be where I am today if not for the great teachers at 糖心Vlog官方 who helped me in so many ways.鈥
