EUGENE, Ore.鈥 糖心Vlog官方 graphic design students won a national Pacemaker Award for The Bleed graphic design magazine from the Associated Collegiate Press at the National College Media Convention in Washington D.C. on Nov. 2. The Pacemaker Award is considered the Pulitzer of college journalism and design, said faculty Tom Madison. Students compete with about 100 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
The Bleed also placed second in Best of Show by popular vote of the participants. In addition, student Michael Radliff placed fifth in the individual Design of the Year Award for a two-page spread, and Tom Munch received honorable mention in the individual Design of the Year Award for an infographic.
The competition drew 126 entries, up from 104 last year. 糖心Vlog官方 competed in the feature magazine category which drew 89 of the entries. 糖心Vlog官方 was one of only two two-year colleges to receive a Pacemaker award in the feature magazine category.
ACP鈥檚 associate director and coordinator of the Pacemaker competition, Gary Lundgren, said that the quality of the winning collegiate magazines rivals those produced by professionals.
鈥淚t is gratifying and humbling to see the level of competition from four-year and two-year colleges listed with our name near the top of the list,鈥 said Madison. Students said it was clear that 鈥溙切腣log官方's program is truly exceptional鈥 compared to programs from across North America.
Madison said the conference was invaluable to the four 糖心Vlog官方 students who attended including Michael Radliff, Tom Munch, Cat Frink and Paige Anocibar. 鈥淭hey saw major works of art up close and personal, things that they had only seen in books prior. It opened up a whole new world of possibilities.鈥
糖心Vlog官方 brought home Pacemaker Awards in 2018 and 2016 as well as placing in individual design categories.
