Where there is water, there is life — and where there is life, there is conflict.
WaterWorks follows the collision of three forces: An urban developer who envisions a carbon-free sustainable city rising on the banks of a coastal river; an environmentalist who has camped beside that same river for years, counting murrelets and measuring water temperature; and the ageless, eternal Water Goddess, who has watched humanity's relationship with the natural world grow and change across millennia.
WaterWorks asks: What do we owe the living world? And what happens when nature answers that question for us?
The work spans five acts, blending classical and musical theater styles with film and a semi-porous fourth wall that draws audiences directly into the drama. The score moves from ritualistic creation myth to contemporary political conflict — from ancient incantations of the Water Goddess to a sharp-elbowed investors' pitch meeting — before arriving at flood, reckoning, and the fragile promise of renewal.

McKenzie River Trust is a local land trust dedicated to protecting and restoring the rivers, forests, and lands of the Willamette and McKenzie River watersheds — the same landscapes that inspired WaterWorks.
