PRESENT Members: Otto Radke, Oregon Employees Federal Credit Union; Dennis Chong, Symantec Corp.; Kevin Crissman, Innovative Designs Online; Connor Salisbury, Squishy Pixels; Les Moore, 4J Schools; Ted Glick, City of Eugene; Chas Horner, Student Representative. Faculty/Staff: Larry Scott, Mari Good, Paul Wilkins, Gary Bricher. ABSENT Members: Nate Chapman, Lorraine Kerwood, Jim Marks, Dale Smith. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES Otto welcomed all and the Fall 2011 minutes were reviewed and approved. II. INTRODUCTION OF NEW STUDENT MEMBER Otto welcomed the new student member of the committee, Chas Horner. Chas said he is a practicing attorney for Vlogٷ County Legal Aid. He has and is taking programming and networking courses. He said he is not currently pursuing a degree but is taking courses of interest in a continuing education mode. III. COMMUNITY SHARING Members were asked to share newsworthy items from their company and the IT community with emphasis on software changes, hiring needs, and major transitions. Ted Glick: City of Eugenes trend is to less in-house developed systems with an increase in vendor supplied commercial software. Rather than development, analysts tasks consist of searching for and selecting packages, then installation and interfacing them with current systems when necessary, and training customers. They have had an analyst position open for an SQL Server DBA but are finishing the hiring process now. There currently is an analyst position open for the fire department. They are looking for four-year degrees or equivalent experience and are a Microsoft shop regarding development tools. Connor Salisbury: Squishy Pixels is in a partnership project with Arcimoto (electric car manufacturer) and so their games projects are on the back burner. The Arcimoto project is a web-based system. Kevin Crissman: At Innovative Designs Online is using Petsight for call center. They are hiring but normally selections are made by first observing a person working as an intern. Dennis Chong: Symantec is moving toward the Cloud. They are increasing standardization even in the customer service team arena. Customer service uses collaborative software Chatter which is like Facebook and Sharepoint combined. They are hiring in tech support. Les Moore: 4J is a member of a state-wide group which has been searching for a new student information system. Synergy from Edupoint has been selected. This will be installed in 90 school districts including 400,000 students. Regarding hiring, They are looking for a senior network engineer. Otto Radke: Oregon Employees Federal Credit Union is moving their main core system to the Cloud. They are removing infrastructure and purchasing services to replace it. They are not hiring now. IV. BUSINESS/DISCUSSION College/Division Update Larry Scott said the administration tracks completion rates, and it is one of the main measures of success of programs. Budget is near status quo which is good news. CITs enrollment is up 7% this year. The college is moving to a college-wide printing and scanning service for students, staff, and faculty. The agreement for the system has been signed, now the project is moving to implementation. Vlogٷ Preview night where High School students come to Vlogٷ to learn about college programs is coming up. The Passport to Health Information Technology boot camp training is coming-up. Alumni Feedback Paul Wilkins introduced the discussion on how we can get better feedback from our CIT graduates about such things as finding employment and whether employed graduates feel they were prepared for their jobs. The department wants to evaluate the quality of its programs and learn how well it is serving students. Good feedback could help us to make appropriate improvements. Some possible feedback mechanisms we have discussed within the department are surveys, social networking, and events to bring the students back for discussion. We are seeking ideas. Lively discussion followed. Some ideas were a job board, blog with news, value exchange in some fashion, alumni association, alumni section on website, portal with local jobs link with fill-in pop-ups asking for last job information. Otto indicated this would be a good project for the committee (one of the agenda items was to continue to discuss ideas for committee goals/projects for the year). There was agreement that the committee should pursue this. It was decided that forming a subcommittee to discuss this topic further would be appropriate and then to bring a report back to the committee. Paul volunteered to lead the subcommittee. Volunteers for this subcommittee are to meet before the next meeting. Revenue Generation Due to lack of time it was agreed to postpone this topic till the Spring meeting. All members were thanked for their attendance and the meeting adjourned at approximately 5:35pm.
