PRESENT Members: Dennis Chong, Symantec Corporation; Ben Barrett, Elevensegrity; Jennifer Cunningham, student representative; David Erickson, Lost Creek Consulting. Faculty/Staff: Gary Bricher, Ron Little, Larry Scott, Linda Loft, Jim Bailey. ABSENT Members: Thea Albright, ITechNW; Eric Fullar, UofO Telecomm Services; Lorraine Kerwood, Next Step Recycling; Oliver Brown, Oregon Judicial Dept.; Wayne Skipper, Concentric Sky; Frank Luperico, EWEB, Ty Schwab, Blackhawk Technology Consulting. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES David Erickson welcomed members and faculty to the meeting. The minutes of the February 12, 2009 meeting were approved as corrected. III. COMMUNITY SHARING Members were asked to share newsworthy items from their company and the IT community. Dennis Chong: Symantec is fairly steady right now with everything operating smoothly. Ben Barrett: Work has been very, very busy. There is a lot of contracting work currently. Also is seeing a fair amount of people career changing due to economic uncertainties. Jim Bailey: The 2nd year Game Programming students are getting programming internships, with a couple at one of the major Game developers in town. Most of the local Game development companies are projecting growth, with Garage Games expecting to double its employees by next year. Jim was awarded a 3-year NSF grant to investigate using Second Life for computing instruction. Several students in the program are helping with the project by developing Second Life scenes. Vlogٷ has received a fair amount of national attention for the work being done. Jim has been invited as a panel member at a Washington DC educational conference the first week in May, and is helping sponsor another national conference in Austin, TX this summer. Jennifer Cunningham: Interviewed and received a paid Coop-Ed internship with OBEC Consulting Engineers this term. She reported that in addition to programming skills, shes expected to have good customer service skills. She noted that there are many new students in the CIT classes, and lots more programming students. Larry Scott: Reported that the Health Informatics Suggested Course of Study will be in the new LCC Catalog for 09-10. The college is still working on the articulation agreement with OIT, expecting that to be signed soon. Portland CC is in the process of finalizing the state-wide, 2-year A.A.S. degree in Health Informatics. David Erickson: Lost Creek Consulting has had a rocky few months, with little business between Jan. and mid-March. This prompted lay-offs of several employees. But now, he has been slammed with business. David associated it with many in the medical field playing the wait-and-see game with the new Obama government. Hes been attending the discussions in Portland about receiving Stimulus Funds in the software industry. He did submit a proposal for funds. IV. THANKYOU'S Linda thanked Ben Barrett for his years of service to the Advisory Board with a certificate of appreciation. V. BUSINESS and DISCUSSION Report from the Computer Information Technology Division Linda Loft reported on the increase of students due in part to the Trade Act which requires students to major in select fields, computing technologies being one of them. This is requiring changes in our course offerings, especially for summer term. Trade Act students are required to go full-time every term including summer. Student enrollment in CIT courses is 50% more than a year ago. That is an increase of 1600 students from fall through spring of this year. Ron Little asked folks to please let interested computing professionals know of our need for additional part-time instructors. Major changes envisioned for IT careers in the next few years. David and Dennis both said IT project management expertise was sorely needed. Ben mentioned the RFID technical issues as well as sales would be a coming area. David said the network operations area where students were grounded in fundamental Operating System skill and remote computing skills would still be very hot. Small businesses still lack the ability to secure their systems with backup and recovery. Larry mentioned all the embedded systems needed to run smart buildings and windmills. There is need for specialized programmers with these skills. Technical compliance specialist, electronic document & archival system specialist, and general application specialist were job areas mentioned. The latter needing lots of customer service and data base reporting skills. Dennis said that exposure to virtualized systems was very important. Local market assessment for IT employability. Jennifer remarked that her internships have shown that employers want computer expertise plus communications/telephone skills, data base skills, and general trouble-shooting skills. CIT students need to change their attitude about customer service skills in order to succeed. Their first job will need lots of help-desk and other general skills. Larry mentioned that knowing a little bit of programming is important even for the generalist. Discussion ensued about where to learn team-building skills. Consensus seemed that learning to work with people in a team was not a strength in technical classes. Teams in technical classes are more oriented around a technical problem to solve, not human relations. Panel speakers for high school visitations. Ron asked for volunteers to accompany faculty members on high school career day activities. Dennis said that he would be available for that type of activity. Bandwidth and other issues for virtualized systems in classroom labs. Ron asked for information and where to find technical expertise to implement virtualized O.S.s on machines without a timely download. Ben suggested using a small VMware where the target OS could be on a USB drive. Ron said they had done some experimentation with that, but it will not work for the newer Windows Operating systems. Dennis mentioned that VMware takes a lot of hardware. One way Symantec deals with it is to use remote connectivity to the servers, not download the images. Activities for next year. Ben recommended having another student, advisory committee social as a way to introduce students to professionals. He felt the one held previously was well received both by committee members and students. Larry suggested having one open advisory meeting next year where all CIT students would be invited to attend. David thanked all members for their attendance and the meeting adjourned at 5:10 p.m., followed by the Annual Advisory Committee Recognition Dinner. The next regular meeting will be in Fall 2009.
