PRESENT Members: Dennis Chong, Symantec Corp.; Thea Albright, iTech NW; Lorraine Kerwood, Next Step Recycling; Brandon Kilgore, Student Representative; Ted Glick, EWEB, Jim Marks, Vlogٷ County. Faculty/Staff: Ron Little, Larry Scott, Linda Loft, Jim Bailey, Gary Bricher. ABSENT Members: Oliver Brown, Oregon Judicial Department; David Erickson, Lost Creek Consulting; Wayne Skipper, Concentric Sky; Ty Schwab, Blackhawk Technology Consulting; Tony Saxman, Lindquist College of Business UofO. INTRODUCTIONS AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES A special welcome was given new members Ted Glick, Jim Marks, and Brandon Kilgore. The Spring 2009 minutes were reviewed and approved. II. APPOINTMENT OF CHAIR Dennis Chong was nominated as Chair, CIT Advisory Council for the 2009-2010 academic year and received unanimous approval by Council members. III. COMMUNITY SHARING Members were asked to share newsworthy items from their company and the IT community. Members were also asked to share information regarding the IT training needs of their organization. Ted Glick reported that EWEB was busy consolidating several platforms developed in the 90s. They are moving away from PowerBuilder and Sybase database toward a .NET environment. Theyre concentrating the number of servers to two. Most of the staff developers will need to be retrained in .NET. Thea Albright commented that she has moved into a new position with NW Community Credit Union as the Director of Social Media. They recently re-evaluated their platform decision and are staying with .NET. There are smaller applications generated in the Marketing area are still using PHP, but those developers are moving to maintenance and support, not development. Most of their training needs are done either through Microsoft trainings or by tuition for college credit-level coursework. NW Community Credit Union has made a big commitment to social media by starting a corporate blog for financial information, and then Facebook and twitter. They were using Graffiti CMS for the blog but were not happy with it and will be moving to new platform. Their goals are to use social media both internally for employees and for external customers. When questioned about employee gripping etc. on corporate-provided Facebook, Thea said for the most part there was little disturbance. They are using Yammer as an internal blog. Employees are finding it more efficient and effective tool for communicating. It was compared to the water cooler conversations as a technique to gain more productivity. Lorraine Kerwood said NextStep Recycling has moved to Drupal for their online store presence. Each department in the organization has a blog. They wont do TV ads anymore as social media is so much better for the type of customer interaction that they want. Many more people are getting involved in their non-profit since they moved to using social media. They are putting any extra budget dollars they can into social media technology. They recently moved to Exchange Server for improved communications, and are moving to Windows 7. The training for Windows7 was done internally. Dennis Chong reported that Symantec has outsourced their internal IT support to HP services (who acquired EDS about 1 year ago). For training, they use a combination of resources. Employees need to train on such a wide variety of customers products used by the customers IT administrators so they use a lot of online resources. Element K was the main source on online books along with Articulate Consulting for corporate training. They have a real training problem happening with the move to Window7, just in time it takes for the large number of employees. Its a lot of learning on the fly. Another issue for Symantec is the expanding into Software as a Service, i.e. Cloud Computing which is becoming more prevalent. Jim Marks explained that Vlogٷ County was a mostly Microsoft .Net shop. They will be moving to Windows 7 during the 2nd quarter of next year. They are also migrating slowing to Win2008 Server. They have recently put in new Cost Accounting and Health & Human Services applications. They use SharePoint as the major communication tool within the organization and on their website for external communication. He sees a need for SharePoint training, especially for the non-IT personnel. The SharePoint designer is considered FrontPage on steroids. Dennis commented that Symantec also uses a lot of SharePoint. BUSINESS and DISCUSSION College/Department report Linda Loft reported on the increase in students that was affecting the whole college but particularly acute in CIT. College-wide the growth this year is approximately 16%. Summer term students more than doubled from the previous summer. By the fourth week of Fall term, CIT has seen an increase of 38%. CIT is having difficulty finding enough faculty to teach classes, especially in specialized areas such as security, gaming, and the new social media tools. Jim Bailey asked for the committee members to look for people in their organizations that might teach part-time. Simulation and Gaming A.A.S. Program Jim Bailey reported on the program started a couple years ago. Its language base is C++ along with data structures, gaming history and techniques, software engineering, and 16weeks of game building in teams. The first class graduated last spring, with some going to work for the local gaming industry, others transferring into 4yr programs, and a few still finishing credits here at Vlogٷ. Health Informatics (HIT) Transfer Program and the A.A.S. Program Larry Scott reported that the transfer Program of Study in HIT (articulated with Oregon Institute of Technology in Portland) started this Fall. There are currently 8 students signed up for this program. Advisory members were given handouts showing the course curriculum students will take. We are also involved in the development of a state-wide Health Informatics A.A.S. program, and expect that to be ready for Fall 2010. All of the publicly funded community colleges (17) in the state are participating and plan to offer the degree at some point in the future. Online versions of all required courses will be developed and made available to all students regardless of their home college. This means that colleges can offer the degree without having to offer every course at their institution. CIT Advisory board projects Ted Glick and Thea Albright volunteered to work with the faculty subcommittee on the Web Development program. Lorraine Kerwood, Jim Marks, and Dennis Chong each said they would be happy to speak on computer careers to either the CIS100 course or accompany faculty on speaking engagements to the high-schools. Coming out of the larger discussion of social media, Larry offered to set up a wiki for the CIT Advisory Council members to pursue discussions. Both Thea and Brandon Kilgore volunteered to be involved with the wiki project. Revised Date for the Winter CIT Advisory meeting Linda Loft reported that a request had been made to move the February meeting from Thursday to Tuesday. After a short discussion and checking of calendars, it was decided to meet on Feb. 16th instead of the 18th. All members were thanked for their attendance and the meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m. The next regular meeting will be February 16th, 2009 at Vlogٷ.
