PRESENT Members: Joe Neely, Symantec Corp.; Thea Albright, ITECH NW; Jody Cline, Vlogٷ Council of Governments; Michael Eldridge, Jerrys Home Improvement, Eric Fullar, UofO Telecomm Services; Lorraine Kerwood, Next Step Recycling; Ben Barrett, Elevensegrity; Oliver Brown Oregon Judicial Department; David Erickson, Lost Creek Consulting; Brian Larson, Student Representative. Faculty/Staff: Mark Williams, David Kelly, Ron Little, Larry Scott, Linda Loft. ABSENT Members: Steve Cordon, Buzz Monkey Software; Frank Lupercio, EWEB. INTRODUCTION AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES A special welcome was given new members: Brian Larson, Thea Albright and Lorraine Kerwood. The Spring 2007 minutes were approved as written. II. COMMUNITY SHARING Members were ask to include information regarding: 1) movement to Vista and Server 2008, 2) Use of wireless networking, and 3) Web 2.0 technologies. Joe Neely said that internally they would not use Server2008 for a year or so, but their Tech support people will be trained to support clients using Server2008. They do not support wireless technologies and Web2.0 is not part of their support services. David Kelly talked about getting CITs labs ready for moving to Vista. Wikis are used for tracking infrastructure support. David Erickson stated that there were no plans for either Vista or Server2008. They have no customers moving yet. He expressed the concerns the Health Care industry has regarding privacy and wireless. As per Web 2.0 they are using Microsofts Sharepoint for sharing documents. Thea Albright said they do custom development and will move to Vista but not until later because of reliance on 3rd party software usage. They are heavy users of Web 2.0 technologies including wikis and Ajax. Lorrain Kerwood stated they are not moving to Vista, but staying with XP and 2000. They also are staying with Server2003 and have no plans to move to Server2008. They use blogs, myFace, etc. but have no one assigned to support it. Mark Williams reported that Bob Barber, the faculty lead of the Computer User Support program has retired. The colleges budget is still shaky, however CIT is not expecting to be cut its unfilled, open positions. The college is applying for another $142K federal grant for the Pathways project. Ben Barrett, reported working on revamping a new clients backup system along with other new wireless projects. There are no plans to move to Vista or Server2008. But Web 2.0 is an emphatic yes as clients are requesting more modernized websites. However, not much has happened yet except for Google maps apps and blogs (Wordspread and BlogSpot). However, TiddlyWiki (TiddlyWiki.org) which runs as a JavaScript app works really well for a small wiki. Larry Scott commented on using Creative Commons as way of sharing instructional materials for Open Source textbooks. The goal is to reduce the cost of textbooks for students. Ben Barrett asked if there were repercussions from the standard publishing companies. Jody Cline remarked that they have one Vista workstation for testing purposes, but no plans to move to the platform. However Regional IT is making noises about moving to Vista and Server2008. The Aruba project is putting in public wireless access though out Vlogٷ County buildings. They are using Ajax, plus some major web projects are happening that are implementing newer technologies (Proxy Server, Exchange 07, Office2007, and some SharePoint -however thats deemed too expensive). Brian Larson said he was in the second year Networking program. He also works for a small IT company. Michael Eldridge reported they have no plans for Vista. But are looking at Sever2008 as a way to standardize the existing servers (Server2000 and Server2003). They use lots of wireless technology including phones. Regarding Web 2.0, they are starting to do some Ajax. Oliver Brown commented they are not planning a move to Vista. They just finished replacing 1800 desktops with WinXP. They will probably move to Server2008. Their intention is to implement both public and private wireless access in the courthouses. Regarding Web2.0, there is none yet, but they are starting a new E-Court initiative using Web portals. This will be a 5-7 year project. They are running Microsofts Groove Server for collaboration. BUSINESS and DISCUSSION Appointment of new Chair Jody Cline consented to be the new Chair for 2008. Computing Networking Degree program review Ron Little passed out the Network Operations program material and asked members to review and give feedback to either himself or Gary Bricher. He then handed out the new Network Security certificate information sheets and talked about requiring four terms to complete. The final course relies on prerequisite material from the three previous courses and therefore the certificate couldnt be completed within one year. Ron requested suggestions for marketing the certificate within the committee members own organizations. A number of suggestions were made including: 1) send a flyer to each committee member as well as past committee members, 2) put it on Craigs list, 3) get a news reporter to do a story or put it on the LCC webpage as a news story, 4) put the course material online., 5) put it on the state webpage listing for training courses and Google searches would find it, 6) send a flyer to all state and tribal agencies that have Security needs, 7) send flyers to the last four years of Networking graduates. Jody Cline said the cost and time to send an employee to training was high, so please advertise this. Larry Scott said making these online would be valuable where employers dont give time off and folks cant make the regular schedule. Joe Neely mentioned that having an instructor-lead class helps understanding the material. Ron talked about taping the lectures for online video streaming. He was experimenting with this, but that it had a ways to go before being completely successful. Brian mentioned he had taken Rons first course with video tapes and it was rough just watching videos with no one to answer questions. Michael E. said to stress the small class size for these courses. Eric F. suggested having the videos cataloged and indexed as a library of lectures and there could be some economic potential in this. Michael E. commented that the VOIP folks arent aware of this security material, and that it really divides into security for server administrators and security for network infrastructure. Ollie B replied that he sees these courses are good basic knowledge the employee needs before sending them to a high-cost vendor course. New Strategies for curriculum revisions Mark asked about: 1) the delivery modality of instruction, 2) the quality of content in open source books, and 3) advertising pathways. Jody C. replied that it is difficult to have a single modality as people differ and suggested doing hybrid delivery. Thea A. said it was important to remember mixed target audience. And that people need to learn to access multi-forms. Mark mentioned that distributed classes were being developed by other institutions. David E. suggested having Saturday classes for older IT people on understanding the newer Web2.0 technologies. Larry S. remarked about using a team approach to help motivate people with online classes. Loraine K. questioned what demographic age we were trying to reach. Mark suggested meeting more often to talk through some of these ideas. David E. said he wasnt for creating meetings just to meet but would be willing if there were a special project. Loraine echoed the statement. A suggestion was made for a special meeting in January, although not on the 21st. All members were thanked for their attendance and the meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. The next regular meeting will be February 14, 2008 at Vlogٷ.
