PRESENT Members: Joe Neely, Symantec Corp.; Jody Cline, Vlogٷ Council of Governments; Eric Fullar, UofO Telecomm Services; Ben Barrett, Elevensegrity; Chris Calise, IP Gear Inc.; Effie Siverts, Student Representative. Faculty/Staff: Mark Williams, Bob Barber, Ron Little, Linda Loft. ABSENT Members: Tim Woolley, InterVision; Craig Wright, Netacomm Systems Integration; Steve Cordon, Buzz Monkey Software; Michael Eldridge, Jerrys Home Improvement; Frank Lupercio, EWEB. INTRODUCTION AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES A special welcome was given new members: Chris Calise and Effie Siverts An email review of the Spring 2005 meeting minutes will be solicited for approval. II. COMMUNITY SHARING Eric Fuller, UofO Telecomm Services reported that the summer was spent on a very large relocation of their communications infrastructure. Jody Cline, Vlogٷ Council of Governments said that Spam is currently a huge issue for them. Also miss-addressed email with correct domain, but invalid user names is clogging their system. Joe Neely, Symantec Corp. stated that the summer was spent moving into their new building and two new support teams (one from Florida) were relocated to the Springfield plant. Several teams are expanding and they are hiring 10-15 entry-level positions per month. They hired seven from CIT's June '06 graduating class. Chris Calise, IP Gear Inc., said that his company had recently become public and changed their name from QualMax to IP Gear. Originally a reseller of CISCO equipment, he joined the company as it's first employee in 2003. They are growing extremely fast, having over $18 million in business last year. Their newest division sells live VOIP. They started with calls to China, then Vietnam, other Asian countries and are now spreading world-wide. Ben Barrett, Elevensegrity reported that he left Lunar Logic in June and is currently doing consulting on Web Design Projects. BUSINESS and DISCUSSION Appointment of Chair and Vice Chair Joe Neely consented to be the new Chair for '06-07 with Chris Calise backing him up as Vice Chair. Computing Networking Degree program review Ron Little presented the recent changes in the Networking degree to the committee. The first year 'core' added courses in Problem Solving with Computers-CS199, and Web Development-CS195. It's called the 'core' as the curriculum is common to the Programming and Computer User Support programs as well as Network Operations. In the second year, a new Network Security Fundamentals-CS284 was added along with changes to other existing courses. Joe Neely asked to see more in-depth information about the courses, particularly for CS284. Mark Williams said the Course Outlines could be sent electronically as well as posted on the CIT Advisory Board's webpage. Joe also asked about the availability of security software, especially from Symantec. Ron replied that currently we have not been successful in getting that software. Jody Cline quizzed Ron regarding the few general education courses in the program and asked about students transferring to 4yr programs. Ron said that few Network majors transfer to 4yr programs. Linda Loft replied that students planning to transfer would be taking the Computer Science transfer program and that those folks combining a 2yr AAS degree program with a transfer program would likely be majoring in Programming, not Networking. They also would and extra year to complete the general education credits necessary for transfer. Ben Barrett remarked that his personal experience transferring to a 4yr program matched that model and he had many more credits than the minimum. Computer Network Security Certificate Ron Little introduced the new, four-course mini-certificate in Security. Prerequisites for taking this certificate are either 2nd year Networking courses, or professional experience. The series is looking to attract IT professionals who want additional training in security and/or Networking majors wanting to add an additional certificate to their degree. The mini-certificate also provides a vehicle for offering new courses without having to push them into existing, tightly-packed programs. Chris Calise said the courses need to be at a 'reasonable' time for professionals to take them. He suggested weekend or evening times. Personally, although he has tried the online variety of professional trainings, the actual in-class style of learning is more effective for him. Ron commented that we need better communication regularly with employers to know their needs for these classes. Eric Fullar questioned the use of a whole term for Wireless networking and suggested adding information on evaluation of products, procurement, and small-scale project management. Often small projects such as moving into new building space will prompt a small company into new network configurations. That it's managing the small, day-to-day aspects of product selection, processing RFP's, understanding budgeting for one-time costs versus on-going costs, etc. that would be excellent additions to the curriculum. But he acknowledged many of these will to change from year to year. Ben Barrett agreed, stating that it's the 'Tips & Tools' such as knowing the legalities of who can wire a building, to the skills of working independently that are helpful. Computer User Support Employer Survey Bob Barber talked about surveying employers with questions about computer end-user support. That the CUS program is moving forward with either a survey or and interview process. He asked if the committee would pre-test his questionnaire looking at whether these are the right questions as well as answering the questions. Eric Fullar suggested having students interview employers to gather this information. Chris Calise agreed and asked if informational interviewing was still part of the curriculum. Effie Siverts commented that she had just completed her interview as part of the Computing Careers Exploration-CIS 100 course. When asked about an online survey, both she and Chris replied yes. Jody Cline said that online style surveying is the only type she does, but it needs to be designed to be do-able within 5 minutes or people won't complete it. Ben Barrett commented that the wording on question#3 could identify the participant. He also suggested a question on flexibility of technical solutions. Ron Little proposed adding a question on project management. Joe Neely said the best participants would be those who have hired our graduates. Bob Barber said the current process of finding out where graduates are places is antidotal. Chris Calise suggested that the survey might carry more weight if sent by the Advisory Board, and that previous committee members might be excellent participants. It was agreed to email the survey to all members of the Advisory Board for further feedback on the instrument's design. GIS in IT curricula Linda Loft explained that the college was embarking on a project to embed GIS components into widely dispersed curricular areas and asked the members to comment on where within IT was GIS utilized. Joe Neely commented on the amazing use of GIS where he previously worked in California. Ben Barrett said floor plan mapping, and web programming extensions for tie-ins with goggle maps. Eric Fullar said all the new cell phone applications are becoming 'location' aware due to requirements for 911 locations. But that the cell phone companies were looking at the wide-spread application of location marketing via cell phones. Jody Cline said that all employees need to learn GIS terminology, that it's becoming pervasive in all high-tech fields and a must-know knowledge base. Joe Neely stated that it should be combined with the database classes. Chris Calise asked why we weren't doing a database certificate track similar to the security track, and we should include GIS there. Ben Barrett said that MySql & Postgress have GIS extensions. Eric Fullar suggested that we use GIS to hook people into database. College/Division News Mark Williams commented on the recent election, and repercussions of Vlogٷ's failed serial levy to the budget. Departments are being asked for both reductions and initiatives in their annual Unit plans due in the next few weeks. Ron Little mentioned that some initiatives being discussed were more certifications, new courses, and more online or hybrid courses. Ben Barrett suggested micro-scale business/IT classes that would help students be more entrepreneurial. Students in particular often are piecing together mini part-time businesses. Mark commented on the need for productivity improvement without losing quality. He will email the committee with the CIT initiatives being forwarded to the administration. Career Pathways Mark Williams introduces the Pathway framework and handed out an additional paper on the subject. Because of federal allocation of funding to high schools and community colleges, programs fitting into the Pathway framework will have access to special funding. Mark also mentioned that he is moving forward on the enrollment analysis project mentioned last year. Board sponsored Lunch meetings Ben Barrett reported that last years lunch meetings with students had very low attendance. Discussion centered on the purpose of the lunches, the time-of-day issues, and suggestions for places to meet. Chris Calise suggested a CIT career fair. Eric Fullar said that crowded restaurants were not conducive for good interaction with students. Mark Williams volunteered the idea of pizza meetings. It was agreed that Ben, Mark, and Effie Siverts would form a subcommittee on this project to see if some meetings could get scheduled during the 2nd half of the school year. Goals for 05-06 Linda Loft suggested given the number of ideas that were discussed today, that the committee Chair and Vice Chair (Joe Neely and Chris Calise) cull these for a list of committee goals to be discussed next meeting. Mark Williams suggested that a subcommittee do this in order to more quickly move on the topics. Linda, Mark, Joe, and Chris agreed to work on the list. All members were thanked for their attendance and the meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m. The next meeting will be February 8, 2007, hosted by Jerry's Home Improvement.
