They have sixty-five stores in the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, & Montana region. Their software is homegrown; based on Visual Basic using SQL Servers. They do have an IBM POS system that they now do their own support for. They have IT personnel serving all the stores so some of their tech folks are on the road a lot. They have current openings for on-road POS technicians and VB programmers. Chris Ballowe: Student Representative. Currently majoring in both Networking and CUS. Eric Fullar: Telecom Srv. UofO. They have had several interns from the CIT programs. Wayne Huck: MPulse Maintenance Software. They have released the .Net version of their software package and are working on a version for hand-helds. They expect to release it in the early part of next year. Tim Woolley, InterVision. InterVision has recently released new testing software. Joe Neely, Symantec Corp. After Symantecs recent merger with another anti-virus company, they are expanding the Eugene/Springfield group. They are adding another building and approximately 1000 more employees. They have a number of current openings. Craig Wright, Netacomm Systems Integration. They are a small shop doing consulting for larger enterprises. They have had many CIT students as interns and have hired several of them. Bart Brewer, InX. Inx, one of the largest integrators in the country has purchased InfoGroupNW. He is the manager of support for the Northwest. Jody Cline: Vlogٷ Council of Governments. She is in charge of the development group and the Help Desk technical folk. Michael Eldridge, Jerrys Home Improvement. He is their Director of IS. Current major projects are 1) Business Intelligence System using Cognos and SQL-Server, and 2) IP telephony. BUSINESS and DISCUSSION Computing Programming Degree program review Mari Good, program lead shared with the committee insights on the current Programming degree program, including its: 1) emphasis Web programming, 2) the new consolidated, first year core curriculum, and 3) low student enrollment. Low student enrollment was attributed to several issues. One was the lack of job opportunities due to both the Y2K hiring and the dot-com bust. Another was the student demographics of the community colleges where some students cannot afford to take a more rigorous program because of other commitments to family and jobs. Some students were transferring into the other CIT programs because this one was so time-consuming. Michael Eldridge commented that only one in three people hired as programmers really have the skills. They are going to Portland to get consultants at $60-$70/hr. Craig Wright asked about having exit interviews with people that dropped out of the Programming degree. Avi Harriman asked if students are required to see a counselor to change their major. Discussion ensued over lack of adequate tracking data. Mark Williams talked about the difficulty of getting good data from the colleges IT systems. It was suggested that the Advisory committee take up the cause of requesting more and better data. Avi Harriman suggested putting together a draft letter to send to the Administration. Avi also suggested that student graduates come out with a letter of recommendation stating the skills a student possesses. Joe Neely inquired if there were national standards for these skills. Mark said that we do follow the ACM academic standards. Avi Harriman suggested surveying of employers for their IT position hiring criteria. And we should consolidate the criteria and publish it for students review. Mari Good asked that this be entry-level criteria. Jody Cline mentioned that they dont hire entry-level positions. Eric Fullar suggested that students should talk directly with employers. Several people commented that this would be very useful and well-received by students. An informal, monthly career fair format was suggested. Mark commented that Fridays would be an ideal time for students if the Advisory committee could organize this activity. Project Management Course Fred Beisse presented an outline of a new course called Managing Technology Projects to be offered as a CIS299 course this winter term. It would be directed at CIT majors, but also working IT professionals who expect to lead a project work team. The emphasis is on project tools, methods, and strategies, focusing on small to medium-size project and teams. Fred asked if people thought if this would be attractive to working professionals and could the advisory members help promote the course. Jody Cline said this was an excellent idea and that their agency did nothing but projects. Michael Eldridge echoed the sentiment saying that IT people often miss deadlines because of lacking basic project management skills. Joe Neely asked if the course would be oriented to the PMB certificate. Fred remarked that the PMB materials would be very boring to students. Michael Eldridge concurred saying that was his experience with a PMB training. Jody Cline suggested that it be later in the day. Evening courses were suggested but comments were made regarding the ability to concentrate after working a full day. College/Division News Mark Williams reported that the College will be looking at a $1.5 million budget deficit this next year. They are not planning on making cuts but looking at deferring projects and reduced hiring to cover the hole. CIT Unit Plans Mark Williams gave the committee copies of the CIT Unit Planning for 06-07. Several of the top priority initiatives were briefly reviewed including: 1) the Computer Careers Course for the Core, 2) the mini-certificate curriculum in gamming programming and network security, and 3) Job Survey and graduate tracking system. Goals for 05-06 Due to time considerations, Linda Loft suggested synthesizing several of the ideas from todays meeting for the committee to review. Avi Harriman passed out an idea sheet of activities resulting from his attendance at the Advisory Chairs breakfast meeting. It was agreed to discuss these at the next meeting. New members told that the Advisory Board members Handbook was posted on the CIT Advisory Boards website. All members were thanked for their attendance and the meeting adjourned at 5:55 p.m. The next meeting will be February 16, 2006 in the CIT library.
